Philadelphia Reading Council Connection
Summer, 2015
Hi Members and Friends,
We hope that you’re beginning to unwind from the school year and enjoying the summer. We know that many of you are busy with grad courses, summer school teaching, and lots of other projects, but hopefully the pace is different and you’re finding some time to reflect, relax, and read, no matter what else is going on.
Here a few items we wanted to share with you--
*Summer Fun Field Trip: We will be visiting the Brandywine Museum on Friday, July 10th to see the Horace Pippin exhibit. (Click on link for directions, cost, etc.) Our plan is to meet at the museum at 10:30, see the exhibit, and have lunch at the onsite cafe. During lunch, we’ll share our reactions to Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet’s award-winning picture book A Splash of Red. You do not have to read the book to participate! Following lunch, our advisory board will have a brief meeting. Any interested PRC members are welcome to join us at that meeting. There is also a lot more to enjoy at the museum and surrounding area, so some people might want to make a day of it. Let us know if you plan to attend, but last minute is fine, and friends are welcome!
*Save-the-Date: Our fall event will be held on Saturday morning, October 17th, at St. Joe’s. We will be focusing on strategies to support ELL students in the regular classroom, at all levels and in various modalities. Our speaker will be Robert Rivera from the School District of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Writing Project. If you have specific issues that you would like to be addressed, feel free to let us know ahead of time. We’ll set up a forum on our discussion board for that purpose, and to continue the conversation after the presentation.
*PhilWP Opportunity: There are a few remaining openings in the Philadelphia Writing Project’s Invitational ELL Summer Institute, open to School District of Philadelphia teachers. It runs from July 20th to August 7th. Go to gse.upenn.edu for details.
*KSRA Annual Conference: Please consider attending all or part of the conference in Lancaster (Oct. 22nd- 24th). The theme is R.E.A.D. – Reimagine, Explore, and Discover. It should be a great experience. See details at http://ksrapa.org
*A Bit of Record-Keeping: If you are a PRC member and also an ILA (formerly IRA) member, would you please let us know asap and include your ILA membership number if possible? Thank you!
Happy Summer to all, and we hope to see you soon!
